Great Himalayan Bike Tour


Day 01: Arrive Delhi Arrive Delhi, transfer to hotel for overnight stay. After breakfast, visit Old and New Delhi. Overnight at hotel in Delhi.

Day 02: Delhi – Chandigarh by train. After breakfast, leave hotel for Chandigarh. Transfer to Railway station and then journey in the train till Chandigarh. Arrive Chandigarh. Transfer to hotel. Afternoon,visit Chandigarh city. Overnight at hotel in Chandigarh.

Day 03: Drive Chandigarh – Shimla (117 km)

Early morning drive to Shimla. Arrive Shimla by afternoon. Evening, hike around the Shimla .Market. Overnight at Hotel.Shimla, originally called Simla, is the capital city of Himachal Pradesh. In 1864, Shimla was declared the summer capital of the British Raj in India. Shimla is often referred to as the "Queen of Hills" (a term coined by the British), draped in forests of pine, rhododendron, and oak. Experiences pleasant summers and cold, snowy winters. The city is famous for its buildings styled in tudorbethan and neo-gothic architecture dating from the colonial era. The city is named after the goddess Shyamala Devi, an incarnation of the Hindu Goddess Kali.

Day 04: Ride Bike Shimla – Saharan (155 km)

Morning after breakfast, Ride your bike to Saharan. Today you enjoy long journey through spectacular valleys Narkanda and Rampur across Satluj River, and stunning gorges and wonderful panoramic landscape surrounded by magnificent Shivalik ranges. You pass through two main towns Narkanda and Rampur. Arrive Saharan visit Bhimakali temple. Overnight at hotel in Saharan.

Shri Bhima Kali Temple is dedicated to the mother goddess Bhimakali, presiding deity of the rulers of former Bushahr State and one of 51 Shakti Peethass. The town Sarahan is known as the gate way of Kinnaur. Down below at a distance of 7 km from Sarahan is the River Satluj.

Day 05: Ride Bike Saharan – Kalpa (51 km) Post breakfast, drive Saharan to Kalpa. Today you enjoy short journey to Kalpa. Evening, short hike to Charming Roghi village. Overnight at hotel in Kalpa.

Kalpa is a small village at a height of 2960m in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Main attraction is Narayan-Nagini temple and Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar monastery. This monastery was founded by Lama Lotsava Rinchen Zangpo (950-1055 AD ). Walk along the narrow lanes of this village up to the temple where you will get a good glimpse of Kinnaur culture and its color full villagers. From Kalpa we can get views of three peaks Roldang 5499m, Jarkanden (6473m) and the Kinnaur Kailash at 6050 m height.

Day 06: Ride Bike Kalpa – Nako (110 km) Leave hotel after breakfast for Nako. Enjoy the journey with the view of awesome and wonderful landscape, stunning gorges and enchanting valleys. Arrive Nako by afternoon. Late afternoon visit residence of H.H Dalai Lama and Nako monastery dating back to 11th century. Overnight at hotel. (3662m)

Nako monastery : The complex of monastery founded on western edge of the town comprising of four temples. From outside, the monastery exudes a very simple appearance, but this is in contrast to what you will see inside.

Two temples are of utmost importance here, the Main temple and the Upper temple. Both these temples are considered to be built in 11th century by Lama Lotsava Rinchen Zangpo.I is the oldest amongst all the structures, still preserve their original clay sculptures, murals and ceiling panels. The largest temple or the main temple is also called the Translator's Temple. It also happens to be the oldest monument in the village. Nako is also the starting point of an ancient trek route originally Buddhist monks used to take traveling between different monasteries in the region.

Day 07: Drive Nako – Tabo (64 km) Morning after breakfast, ride bike to Tabo. Just a few kilometers off the point where NH-22 ends near Indo-Tibetan border, is the high altitude Oasis of Nako. You drive along with downstream Spiti River towards Tabo. Overwhelm your journey with spectacular and enchanting view of panoramic landscape of Spiti valley. Arrive Tabo by afternoon. Post Lunch, visit Tabo monastery and explore charming village,perched at an altitude of 3050 m, it offers magnificent views of the valley below. Overnight at hotel.

Day 08: Ride Bike Tabo – Dhankar – Pin valley – Kaza/ Rangrik (45 km) Today you have a most comfortable journey along downstream Spiti River, good road and magnificent view of enchanting Spiti valley surrounded by huge marvelous plateau. An hour's drive away is Schichilling, from where you take a right turn to Dhankar Gompa, 7kms away. Another 5ms towards Kaza is a diversion going to imposing Pin Valley from a place called Attargo. After visiting Pin valley, drive back to Kaza. Arrive Kaza (Capital of Spiti), fairly well developed small town, 3600m high. Overnight at hotel in Kaza/ Rangrik.

Day 09: Ride Bike Kaza / Rangrik – Ki – Langza – Comic - Kaza Today you have full day sightseeing tour around Spiti valley. Morning after breakfast, ride your bike to Langza village where you visit Kingdom of Leopard. Later ride Bike to visit Komic monastery which belongs to Saskya school of Tibetan Buddhism. After the visit, ride back to Kaza/Rangrik via visiting picturesque Ki monastery. Later ride back to Kaza/Rangrik. Overnight at hotel in Kaza/ Rangrik.

Ki Monastery was founded by Brom-ston 1008-1064 CE, a pupil of the famous teacher, Atisha, in the 11th century. This may however, refer to a now destroyed Kadampa monastery at the nearby village of Rangrik, which was probably destroyed in the 14th century.

Day 10: Ride Bike Kaza/Rangrik – Kumzomla (4590m) – Keylong (206 km) Post breakfast, continue ride bike to Keylong. From Kaza, the first main village is Losar, about 60 km away. A little further on is the Kunzum La (4590m). From the pass, a 9km trail goes to the lovely Chandratal (Moon Lake), at about 4250m. Batal is the starting point for treks to nearby Bara Shigri (Big Glacier), which is up to 10km. long and 1km wide - one of the longest glaciers in the Himalaya. There are a couple of dhabas (Small Food Corners) at Baal offering basic food.

You rejoin Leh-Manali highway at Gyamru. Few kilometers approach you at Khoksar, is desolate and regarded as the coldest place in Himachal Pradesh. There's a police check point here and you will need to get out and sign the register. Arrive Keylong by evening. Overnight at hotel in Keylong.

Day 11: Ride Bike Keylong – Baralacha-la (4980m) - Sarchu (116 km) Morning after breakfast, continue your journey to Sarchu along the beautiful valley. At Darcha, the road goes up in zigzag steep incline to the left which leads to the Leh. Follow the road, open valley. Today your journey will be long also and you pass through a place called Zingzingbar (4150 m), military camp and a river over a bridge and several rising steeps and a plateau. After zigzag ascent of slope, you reach near a attractive lake and then the road passes through large imposing pasture and the Baralacha-la (4980m). The road continues on the left bank of the Tsarap River. Ultimately you reach at your destination. Overnight at fixed camp in Sarchu. (4290m)

Day 12: Ride Bike Sarchu – Nakeela (4730m) - Tsokar Lake (120 km) Morning after breakfast, ride your bike to Tsokar, 118 Km from Sarchu. After crossing the border between Himachal and Jammu & Kashmir at Sarchu, drive straight to foot of Nakeela (4740m) then drive up hill in loops (gata loop) up to the Nakeela. En-route superb view of surrounding colored mountains, halt at Pang for tea and some refreshment then proceed to Tsokar. Arrive Tsokar (Salty Lake), Overnight at fix camp in Pangunagu. (4590m)

Tsokar Lake is approximately 95 km northwest of the Tsomoriri Lake at a height of 4,490m. It is also called "White Lake" because of the salt deposited around it- this is because there is no outlet from the lake which makes the water brackish. In ancient times, the salt from the lake used to take out and sell it all over Ladakh and Kashmir by the local nomads known as the Changpas. Tsokar Lake is breeding grounds for a variety of birds among them the bar-headed goose, the great crested grebe, the brahmin duck and the brown headed gull.

Day 13: Ride Bike Tsokar – Polokongkala (4970m) - Tsomoriri Lake (86 km) Leave camp after breakfast for Tsomoriri, 86km. Today you cross one pass and ou pass through spectacular view of surrounding mountains and hot sulphur spring at Puga village, Tibetan refugee village Sumdo and awesome Kyagar-tso Lake (beautiful small Lake) with Nomadic camp. Continue with enjoying the riding along the bank of Tsomoriri Lake up as far as Korzok village. Overnight at fix camp in Korzok with spectacular view of Lake. Afternoon short ride around the Lake while capturing the view of imposing scenery of the turquoise Lake. (4620m)

Tsomoriri Lake located in the Changthang (northern plains) area, is a High Altitude Lake with an altitude of 4620m, the largest of the High Altitude Lakes in the Trans-Himalayan biogeographic region, entirely within India. It It is 23km long and 4-5km wide and is hemmed between Ladakh in the North and Tibet in the east and Zanskar in the west; the Changthang plateau is the geographical setting with snow peaks that provides the source of water for the Lake. Accessibility to the lake is limited to summer season only. Tsomoriri Lake is also breeding grounds for a variety of birds among them the bar-headed goose, the great crested grebe, the brahmin duck and the brown headed gull.

Day 14: Ride Bike Tsomoriri – Chumathang - Sakti (190 km) Have breakfast with spectacular and beautiful view of Tsomoriri Lake. Start your riding to Sakti village. Cross Mahe Bridge over Indus River then continue your journey along with the Indus River as far as Kharu village. On the way, many beautiful villages and hot sulphur spring at Chumathang. At Kharu, take right hand side road that leads to Sakti village. Arrive Sakti and visit Takthok (Rock roof) monastery, famous for meditation. Famous for black and white astrology. Overnight at Camp in Sakti. (3650m)

Day 15: Ride Bike Sakti – Warila (5250m) - Nubra (135 km) Morning after breakfast, ride bike to Nubra by crossing Wari-la pass (5250m) that provides spectacular view of wonderful landscape. Cross the pass then enter in Nubra valley also known as valley of flowers. En route, you enjoy riding across Shyok River, enchanting valley and wonderful gorges and charming villages of Nubra valley. Overnight at fix Camp in Nubra.

Day 16: Ride Bike Tirith – Diskit – Hunder – Tirith Morning after breakfast drive to Deskit and visit the picturesque monastery , built on hill top in 1820 by Lama Paldan Sherap, It's a branch of Thiksey monastery and there reside about 80 monks. Just below the monastery you, visit recently built big statue (100ft) of Maitreya Buddha. This statue was inaugurated by H.H. 14th Dalai Lama on 26 July 2010. After Diskit, continue drive to Hunder where you find attractive Sand dunes and you enjoy the double humped camel riding for an hour. After enjoying the camel riding, drive back to Tirith. Overnight at Camp. (3400m)

Day 17: Ride Bike Nubra – Khardongla (5602m) – Leh (120 km) Morning after breakfast, ride to Leh, 120km. En-route you cross the world highest mororable road, Khardong-la (5400m). Creating the history, cross the Khardong-la then ride downhill to Leh. From across here, capture and enjoy picturesque and amazing view of landscape of Leh town and Indus valley surrounded by snow covered huge Himalayan Mountains. Arrive Leh by afternoon, Post Lunch, relax for a couple of hours then short hike around Leh market. Overnight at hotel in Leh. (3500m)

Day 18: Leh Day Free. Overnight at hotel in Leh.

Day 19: Full day Sightseeing of Stok – Matho – Hemis – Thiksey After breakfast, ride Bike to Stok via Choglamsar by crossing a bridge on the river Indus. In Stok, visit the royal palace of present king and queen which constructed by the king Tsespal Tondup Namgyal in 1825. Inside the palace, you see great collection of ancient royal ornaments, Thankas and old statues. After visiting Stok Palace, drive to Matho village, 10 km from Stok. Visit Matho monastery built by Lama Tumgpa Dorje.

The famous two oracles (known as Rongtsan), who were invited from Tibet by the founder of this monastery, still make appearance during the festival of the monastery. Later, ride bike to Hemis monastery. The great Mahasiddha Staktsang Raspa along with great ancestor Singey Namgyal built this biggest monastery in 16th century. After visiting this monastery, drive back to Thiksey monastery, which is 27 km from Hemis. This monastery is the oldest monastery of Gelugpa sect in Ladakh. The great Lama Paldan Shesrap built in 14th century. Here you visit the big statue of the Future Buddha. After visiting this monastery ride back to Leh. Overnight at hotel in Leh. (3500m)

Day 20: Flight Leh – Delhi Early morning transfer to Airport to catch flight for Delhi. Arrive Delhi, transfer to hotel. Afternoon visit local places. Late evening transfer to International Airport to catch the return flight.
